Battle rap has existed forever in hip-hop for years but before many new leagues Virginia had already started to document and organize battles. There was a few leagues around the world such as grind time, pit fights, and a few others. In Virginia there had been no other league created to document and match the format of battle rap as we know it today. This credit is given to a young man named “Malc.”
In this era written raps were frowned upon and freestyle was the highest and most appreciated aspect of battle rap. To step in front of crowds of people to rap and destroy your opponents takes a certain level of confidence and skill. Back in 2009 battle rap was more dangerous than in 2019. Being that many emcees straddled the fence of disrespect some topics and words were carefully used being that it was not regarded as” just a battle.”
Even 2 years prior to the formation of head hunters Malc also started rapping in high school around norfolk creating what would soon turn into Head Hunters and spark the rise of VA’s first rap battle league.
